How and why did Witch Cult form?
We started off back in October 2010, just as 4 friends who liked powerviolence and wanted to play music together.
Who influences Witch Cult? Where does the Fast/Slow tag come from?
We take influence from a load of different bands/musicians, but mainly Powerviolence, and slow, heavy bands I guess. The Fast/Slow tag was just something stupid we came up with early on, it sounded dumb then and it sounds even dumber to me now, but I guess it describes our sound? sort of…
All your songs are very short. Will future material carry on the same?
Yes. We might do a record with just long, slow, heavy jams one day….
There was a lot of mystery about the band when you formed. Was this purposely done? how did it start?
Yeah it was on purpose, we basically just said at practice “you know what would be funny….” and it went from there. Like I said before, this was never intended to be anything serious, just friends having fun playing music. In retrospect it’s actually quite disconcerting to see how many people jumped on the ‘hype’ bullshit and started singing our praises before we had recorded anything or played any shows. Idiots. Although, it did help us get 1 or 2 shows, so that was something positive that came from it all.
The first Witch Cult recordings where done live on tape and released very limitedly. Can you give more info on that?
There are 7 unique recordings of this release. They were all recorded onto a 4-track at practice, with just 2 crap mics, all lucky takes, and we weren’t able to listen back to them straight away (on one of the tapes we have to start Deteriorate twice because Nick kept throwing his sticks away for some reason). Then we dubbed each one once, creating 14 tapes (2 copies of each recording).
Your self titled album was released by Holy Roar. Why did you decide to release this through a label rather than self release like your tapes?
I’m friends with Alex, and also play in another band with him. He asked to hear the recordings, and when he heard them he said he liked them and offered to put them out. He helped us out, and we helped him out, that’s what friends do.
Witch Cult seems to have gone through a few members - mainly bass players?
Our original drummer, Nick, moved to Canada last year, so I took over drum duties. Our good friend Dom from Working Man/Ladstorm filled in on bass for a few shows, and now Liz is full time on bass. Nick gets back in June, so from then it’ll be Dean on vocals/noise, Nick on drums, Liz on Bass and now that Curt has moved to Berlin, Myself and/or Tom on guitar. Tom’s a better guitarist than me so I’ll probably get kicked out soon. Confused?
Witch Cult recently completed an impressive 59 date euro tour with Beartrap. How was this arranged and how did you find the experience?
Mike from Beartrap and Adam from Brain Ache booked it all. Touring was incredible; we went to lots of nice places, played lots of cool shows, saw lots of cool bands, and met lots of great people.
Do you have any more tours/shows planned?
No tours planned at the moment, but we have the following shows booked: Full Of Hell - Brighton - 14th May Wormrot - Plymouth - 10th June Weekend Nachos - Bristol - 1st July Coke Bust/Sick Fix - Manchester - 4th August
Any other future plans for Witch Cult?
Lots of writing! A split with Water Torture from NY, a split with Beartrap on Spiderbaby Records and a split with Kernow’s finest Doom 2 Piece, Monolithian. We are also doing some floppy disc releases on ‘Amps Against Trend’, a new label that Adam from Dirty Demos has just set up. I’m sure there will be some internet whining regarding that. whatever. boo hoo.

ONE DAY LEFT!
Mass: Real talk
Just buy their fucking album ok, Mazz doesn’t want to have to go to the Job Center tomorrow.
It comes with great sadness that our beloved bass player, misanthrope, and very own Based God, Gareth Davies, has flown the nest and has decided he will no longer play in Bastions.
He has left to pursue his post-university ambitions in Journalism, if you know Gareth and his wit, you’ll know that it’ll be put to good use. We wish him all the best. Godspeed.
I’m gonna miss this dude. I love him like a brother. Goodbye, Sweet Price.
